Understanding Dementia

Dementia is an umbrella term encompassing a range of progressive brain conditions. While it is typically diagnosed in individuals over 65, dementia can affect people of any age.

The brain consists of nerve cells that communicate by sending messages to one another. In a person with dementia, these nerve cells become damaged, hindering effective message transmission and impairing normal brain function.

There are over 200 variations and causes of dementia, with the four most common types being:

  1. Alzheimer’s disease

  2. Vascular dementia

  3. Frontotemporal dementia

  4. Dementia with Lewy bodies

By understanding the nature of dementia and its impact on the brain, we can better support those affected by this condition and work towards improving their quality of life.
